Funkitude

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I was back and forth with @kylaworld the other night and she mentioned The Cult. Or maybe she blip.fm‘ed it. Dunno.

I’m a big fan of The Cult, have been for almost 25 years.

As I’m also a perpetual fan of Pandora.com for most of my music needs I decided to see what would come up if I seeded a new station with “The Cult”.

Holy Righteous Shit!

The Cult
Alice In Chains
AC/DC
Zepplin
Soundgarden

It just keeps going.

Most of it is stuff I know cold. I’ve only down voted one tune (because frankly I’ve heard enough Guns & Roses for this lifetime.)

So here’s the link to the station. Give it a listen if you’re of a mind to.

Haydn? Who knew?

I don’t know nothing about nothing about classical music. This came up somewhere in the twitterverse. I listened to it (twice) then dug around for other videos of people playing the same piece. They all sounded mechanical in comparison.

Twitter + YouTube, is there nothing they can’t do?

Capital Funkitude: De La

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

While in the Manhattan the other day I picked up a couple CDs on a goof. Virgin was having their $10 sale (does that ever end?) and I was rummaging through the racks and boxes of schlock and dated music when I came across De La Soul Timeless: The Singles Collection.

Now, the only De La Soul I had was De La Soul Is Dead, which is one of the great albums of all time. So I figured wth; $10 is $10. I’m not so terribly likely to go backfill the entire De La Soul discography. Maybe, but… probably not.

I picked that up with Ice Cube’s new offering (which I’d given a sample listening and was on sale for $10.99)

For the last 4 days I’d forgotten about ‘em. I just saw the bag sittin on my couch and I started importing.

Plug Tunin’ came on as the import started.

He saw that it had been wrought with capital funkitude.

And it was good.

Capital Funkitude… NOT (Buddha Bar X)

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I walked by the music store in Grand Central the other day and saw, sitting in the window, the latest installment in the Buddha Bar series.

To round this out a bit I should say that I have all of these albums on my iPod in one contiguous play list.  I frequently start the thing, then listen to nothing else for days. (I also don’t listen to my iPod anywhere but sitting at my desk in work.)  Each edition is a 2-cd set, so this is something like three days of music.

Even so the list has been getting a bit played out.  I really quite enjoy them all though; some more than others.  Sure, a couple of them took a bit of work to get used to (IV most notably.)  But they have their place in the canon and they keep me going.

But holy CRAP is this installment horrible.  Not “oh I’ll get used to this” mediocre.  It’s really really bad.    It’s bad music, poorly mixed in every way.  Sloppy selection and sloppy execution.

Save yourself.
